THE SAYINGS OF JESUS

Lifochristus,  a fellow servant in our Lord Christ Jesus, together with the assembly of brothers and sisters at the church of Antioch desiring to serve with you in spreading the gospel. To the brothers Paul, Luke and Silas blessings to you in the Lord Jesus Christ.

We have been encouraged after having heard of the good work that Christ is doing through you,

and we are praying for you daily. Through this task of recording the sayings of our Lord Jesus Christ we are excited to tell you that his spirit has been working mightily in the hearts of the people of the church and through this many have also received the salvation of our Lord Christ Jesus.

Jesus was speaking in parables:

Wicked Servant

“A rich land-owner moved to another land and left tenants to farm it.  When he sent his servant for his share, the wicked tenants beat him and humiliated him.  He sent other servants, and the tenants beat some and murdered others.  Finally, he decided to send his only son, saying to himself, ‘Surely they will respect my son.’  But when they saw his son coming, they plotted, saying, ‘We can kill the son and take the land for ourselves.’  Surely when the owner comes, he will pay back the wicked tenants for their evil.”

            The Talents and the Servants

“A rich master went away on a journey.  He left a share of his money with each of his servants.  To the first servant, he gave ten talents.  To the second, he gave five.  And with the third servant, he left one.  The first invested it, as did the second, but the third buried it to keep it safe.  When the master returned, the first servant presented his earnings, saying, “Look, master, I have invested the ten talents you gave me, and now I have twenty.”  The second servant said, “Look, I have invested the five talents you gave me and have turned it into ten.”  But the third servant said to his master, ‘I knew that you were a tight-fisted man, and I feared you, so I buried the talent.’  And the master said, ‘you wicked and evil servant, be gone from my kingdom.  You are a disgrace.  For to whom much is given, much will be required.’ So then the master took the one talent and gave it to the servant with twenty.”

            Good Samaritan

When Jesus was speaking with the Pharisees regarding who one’s neighbor is, he said, “One day, a certain Jewish man was on his way home from Jerusalem down to Jericho.  On his way, he was attacked by robbers, stripped, and beaten.  Then he was left to die on the side of the road.  A Pharisee walked by and did not stop.  A Levite also walked by and passed on the other side.  And along came a Samaritan who had mercy on the man and bandaged his wounds, put his coat on him, put him on his own donkey, took him to an inn in a nearby town and gave the innkeeper two shekels and told him to care for the man.  He would pay for whatever costs were incurred when he returned. Who do you say the neighbor is?”

Seeds and Soil

And Jesus told another parable, “One day a sower went out to sow seeds.  Some seeds fell along the path and the birds came and snatched them away.  Some seeds fell on shallow soil.  They sprouted up, but the sun withered them because they had no roots.  Some fell among the thorns and were choked out.  And other seeds fell on good soil and produced a crop thirty, sixty, even a hundred-fold.”  Then Jesus explained the parable, “The seed is the word of God.  The seed that fell along the path are like those who the devil comes to and snatches the word away.  The shallow soil is like those who receive the word with joy, but had no roots, and when persecution came, they turned away.  The seed that fell among the thorns is like those who receive the word, but the pressures, worries, and riches of this life caused them to fall away.  But the seed that fell on good soil are like those who receive the word and obey it, producing a harvest a hundred fold.”

            Prodigal Son

Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is like a man who had two sons.  The younger son came to the father and said ‘Give me my share of the inheritance’ and so the father did so.  The son then went to a far away place where he squandered away his money in wild living.  Then there came a famine in the land and he was forced to hire himself out feeding swine.  He became so hungry he longed to fill his stomach with the slop the swine were eating. Then he thought ‘even the servants in my father’s house eat better than this.’ He said to himself, ‘I will go to my father and say, ‘I have sinned against heaven and against you.  I am no longer worthy of being called your son.  Make me like one of your hired men.’  He went back home and while he was still a way off his father saw him and ran to him embracing him.  Before he could explain the father instructed his servants, “Bring me a robe, put a ring on his finger, and kill the fattened calf for my son who was dead is now alive, who was lost and now is found.’ The older brother coming in from the fields sees the celebration and asks a servant what is going on and the servant says ‘your brother has returned home and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf.’ The older brother becomes angry and refuses to go inside so the father goes out to him saying ‘why are you not celebrating with the household?’ The older brother said ‘you never once have slaughtered the fattened calf. Now this son of yours takes his inheritance and squanders it on prostitutes.’ Then the father replies ‘don’t you understand this brother of yours was lost but now is found was dead but now alive.’”

            Unmerciful Servant

“There was a servant who owed the king one thousand shekels.  He went to the king and begged him to release him from his debt.  The king showed him mercy and sent him on his way.  That same day, the same servant went to a man who owed him one hundred denarii.  The man pleaded with him to give him more time, that he would pay back his debt.  The servant did not have mercy on him and had him thrown into debtor’s prison because he could not pay.  The king heard of what the servant had done and he had the servant thrown into debtor’s prison until he could repay the one thousand shekels he had been forgiven.”

Sayings about the Kingdom of God

Rich Man and Lazarus

Jesus said, “Once there was a rich man and a beggar named Lazarus.  Lazarus would beg at the rich man’s gates, however the rich man never showed him mercy and gave him any money.  While Lazarus was begging at the rich man’s gates the dogs would come and lick his sores.  It came to pass Lazarus died and he went to heaven and the rich man died and went to hell.  The rich man looked up from hell and begged for a drip of water from Lazarus but there was a great divide that he could not cross. The rich man wanted Lazarus to go warn his family that they were all going to hell unless they changed their ways. He was told that if his family did not listen to the prophets and Moses that not even someone who came back from the dead could persuade them.”

Virgins and the Oil

“The kingdom of God is like ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom.  Five of the virgins brought just enough oil however five brought extra.  The coming of the bridegroom was near but the time was unknown.  The five that only brought just enough oil lamps needed oil because they were low.  They asked to borrow some oil, but were refused, so they went out to get more oil.  While the five that didn’t have enough oil were out the bridegroom came and they were locked out where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Children

“It is better to tie a millstone around your neck and be cast into the sea than to cause one of these little ones to stumble.  Unless you come to me like a little child you will not see the kingdom of God.”

“Let the little children come to me.  Do not stop them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.  I tell you the truth, if you do not have the faith like a little child, you will not see the kingdom of heaven.”

The Lost Sheep

Jesus said, “The Kingdom of God is like a man who had a hundred sheep.  When one went missing, the man left the ninety-nine to get the one that wandered off.  When he found the sheep, he went back and gathered all his friends and neighbors and said, “Rejoice with me!  I have found the lost sheep!”  and then Jesus said, “For there is more rejoicing in heaven when one lost person is rescued than for ninety-nine righteous people who do not need rescuing.”

The Lost Coin

Jesus said, “The Kingdom of God is like a woman who had ten coins and lost one.  She searched everywhere in her home.  She searched high and low for the coin.  When she finally found the coin, she called all of her friends and neighbors, saying, “Rejoice with me!  I have found my lost coin!”

“Let not your heart be troubled, believe in God, believe also in me.  In my father’s house there are many rooms.  If it were not so, I would have told you.  And I am going to prepare a place for you, and if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself.”

The disciples asked Jesus, “How will we know when you are coming”

Eschatology

“If anyone says, ‘Look, there he is in the desert,’ do not listen to him.  Many will come and deceive many, performing great signs and wonders and casting out demons in my name.  Do not be deceived, for the Son of Man has not yet come.”

“You will know the end is near by these signs: destruction and famine in the land, earthquakes, there will be wars and rumors of wars, brother will rise against brother, nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom.  And when you see the abomination of abominations standing where it should not be, there in the Holy Place, flee for the hills.  And woe to nursing mothers in those days!  And this generation will not fade until all of these things have been fulfilled.”

“The coming of the Son of Man shall be like a thief in the night.  No one knows the time or the hour.”

“Just as lightning strikes and is seen in the east and the west, so shall be the coming of the Son of Man.”

“Two men will be working in the field, one will be taken and the other left.  Two women will be gathering water at the well.  One woman will be taken while the other is left.  So shall be the last days.”

Teachings

Nicodemus and Jesus

Nicodemus asked Jesus how to receive eternal life.  To this Jesus answered, “You must be born again.”  Nicodemus then wanted to know how a grown man could be born again and re-enter his mother’s womb.  Jesus then replied, “You must be born of the water and the spirit.  The spirit is like a wind; you do not know where it came from, nor where it is going.”

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send him into the world to condemn it but so that the world through him might be saved.”

“Satan comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but I have come so you may have life and you may have it more abundantly.”

The Rich Young Ruler

A Rich young ruler approached Jesus and asked “Teacher how do I get to heaven?”  Jesus replied “You know the Commandments, honor your father and mother, do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal” and the Rich young ruler replied “All these things I have kept since my youth” and Jesus said you lack one thing, sell all you have and give it to the poor and then come follow me.  At this the rich young ruler was sad and went away.  Then Jesus said “surely I tell you it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. Then the disciples asked “How then can anyone get to heaven?” and Jesus said” With God anything is possible”

A Widow’s mite

Jesus said to the Pharisees, “See, this woman has given the most, for out of her poverty she gave everything she had.”

The Adulterous Woman

When the Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus into denying the law he said, “Let anyone who is without sin cast the first stone.”

Women at the Well

He told her, “You have water, but you will become thirsty again. But I can tell you of living water in which you will never thirst again.”

Beattitudes

When Jesus was speaking on the Mount of Olive, to a great multitude, he said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for they shall see God.  Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth.  Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the sons of God.  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be filled.  Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.  Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.  Blessed are those who are persecuted, for their’s is the kingdom of heaven.

Sermon on the Mount

Jesus spoke to the crowd, saying, “You have heard it said, do not commit adultery, but I say to you that if a man lusts after another woman he has already committed adultery in his heart.”

“You have heard it said, do not murder, but I say to you that if a man hates his brother he has already committed murder in his heart.”

“Why do you worry about what you are going to wear and what you are going to drink?  Look at the lilies of the field, not even King Solomon in all his splendor was not adorned as well as these.  Look at the birds of the air, they do not worry about what they will eat or drink, but God takes care of them.  How much more will your heavenly father care for you?  If your child asks you for a piece of bread, you would not give him a scorpion.  If he asks for an egg, you would not give him a stone.  Of if he asks for a fish, you would not give him a snake.  If you who are evil take care of your children such as this, how much more will your heavenly father take care of you?  Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself and it has enough worries of its own.  Rather, seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

“Moses has told you that you can attain divorce with a certificate, but I tell you that this was given because of the hardening of your hearts.  I say to you, if a man divorces his wife and marries again, he commits adultery.  And if a woman divorces her husband and marries again, she also commits adultery.  This is what is meant by ‘a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two shall become one.”

“Why do you worry about the speck of dust in your brother’s eye when you have a log in your own?  You hypocrites!  First, get the plank out of your own eye, then you will be able to see to remove the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye.”

“If you are going to the temple to make an offering and remember that you have something against your brother, leave your sacrifice at the altar and reconcile yourself to your brother.  If you cannot forgive the brother that you can see, how can you receive forgiveness from your heavenly father whom you can not see?  If you don’t forgive those who have sinned against you, then your heavenly father will not forgive you.”

“You have heard it said, eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, but I say if your brother strikes your left cheek, turn your right.  If a soldier asks you to walk a mile, go with him two.”

“A man built his house on the sand and another man built his house on a rock.  When a storm came the foolish man that built his house on the sand was destroyed; however, the wise man that built his house on the rock was preserved.”

“You have heard it said, love those that love you and hate those that hate you, but I say to you, love your enemies, bless those that curse you, and pray for those that despitefully use you and persecute you.”

“You are the salt of the earth.  What good is salt if it loses its saltiness?  It is good for nothing except to be thrown into the street and trampled by men.  You are the light of the world.  A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  Who lights a lamp and covers it with a bowl?  He lights it and puts it in the middle of the room so the entire room can be seen.  In the same way, let you light so shine before men that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father in heaven.”

“You tithe mint, cumin, and dill.  You do well, but you lack the more important things of the law, such as righteousness and justice.”

“When you pray, do not pray as the Pharisees for they pray loudly, and for the benefit of man.  Instead, go into your prayer closet.  And your heavenly father who sees what you do in secret will reward you.  The Pharisees have already received their full reward from men.”

“When you fast, do not fast as the Pharisees, who look downcast, sit in sackcloth, and put ash on their heads, but anoint your heads with oil, and go on about your business.”

      Prayer

Regarding his disciples’ question of how to pray, Jesus answered, “Our Father, who is in heaven.  Hallowed by thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.  Amen.”

The Greatest Commandment

When asked what the greatest commandment was, Jesus said, “Hear O’ Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.  And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  The second is like it:  love your neighbor as you love yourself.  On these two commands rest all the laws and the prophets.”  When a scribe said Jesus had spoken this wisely, Jesus replied, “You are not far from the kingdom.”

Commissions

This is what Jesus said before being taken up into heaven:  “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore, as you are going, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you.  And surely, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

“As the father has sent me, so I am sending you.”

“Go into all the world and preach the gospel.”

“And you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in Samaria, and in all Judea, even to the ends of the earth.”

I Am Statements

“I am the bread of life.”

“I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in me will have life, even though he dies.”

“I am the light of the world.”

“I am the good Shepherd.”

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Passion

The Last Supper

Jesus and his disciples met in an upper room. Jesus said to them, “Take this bread it is my body, broken for you. Take this cup for this is my blood poured out for you. Whenever you take this bread and drink this cup, do this in remembrance of me.” Then Jesus shocked his disciples and said, “The one I give the bread to is the one that will betray me.” He then looked at Judas and said, “Whatever you are about to do, do it quickly.”

In the garden of Gethsemene, Jesus began to pray and while praying, he said, “Father, if there is any way this cup could pass, let is pass from me, but not my will, but yours be done.”  He went back to his disciples and said, “Why are you sleeping?  Could you not stay awake a little longer.  Pray that your may stay awake, for the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”  After praying again, he came back and said, “Awaken!  For the hour has come for the Son of Man to be betrayed!”

When Judas betrayed him, he said, “You would betray me with a kiss?”  He said to those who came to arrest him, “Why do you come at me with torches and swords?  I was teaching in the temple daily.  Why did you not seize me then?”

After Jesus’ arrest, he was brought before the Sanhedrin and tried.  He was asked by them, “Are you the son of God.”  In response he replied, “I am.”

As the crowd mocked him when he was on the cross, he said, “Forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”  To the thief who asked for forgiveness, he said, “I tell you this, today you will be with me in paradise.”

When Jesus was on the cross, also said, “My God, my God why have you forsaken me?”

To Mary and John who were at the foot of the cross at his death, he said, “Woman, behold your son; son behold your mother.”

To God, he said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”

“It is finished.”

The call of the disciples

Jesus saw James and John fishing and said to them, “Drop your nets, follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”

Sending the Disciples

Jesus sent out the disciples telling them, “Take only one cloak and a staff. When you go to a city, stay at that same house until you leave. If you are rejected by a city, shake the dust off your sandals at the city gate and move on to the next city.”

The cost of discipleship

As Jesus was talking with his disciples he said to them, “Whoever wants to be first must be last and whoever is last will be first. Whoever does not hate his father, mother, sister, brother, wife, children, cannot be by disciple. Whoever wants to gain his life must lose it. What does it profit a man to gain the whole world but to forfeit his soul. Whoever will come after me, must take up his cross and follow me.”

Passion Prediction

Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” They replied, “Some say Elijah, others say a prophet.” Jesus then stated, “But who do you say I am?” Then Peter replied, “You are the Messiah.” Jesus responded, “The Son of Man must be betrayed and handed over to the enemy to be killed. Three days later rising again.” Peter rebuked him saying, “That will never happen.” Jesus looked at his disciples and said, “Get behind me satan, for you are thinking of earthly things not heavenly things.

Miracles

Walking on Water

The disciples were overcome with fear until Jesus said, “It is I, be not afraid.”

Peter said, “Lord if it is you, bid me to come unto you.” Jesus replied, “Come unto me.”

Peter stepped out onto the water, but soon began to sink. Jesus then said, “O ye of little faith. Why did you doubt?”

Calming the Storm

On a stormy night, Jesus was asleep in the bowels of the boat. The disciples cried out to him and he replied, “Why are you afraid?”

Then Jesus by saying, “Peace. Be still,” calmed the storm.

Water to Wine

Jesus was at a wedding and the people ran out of wine. Mary pleaded with Jesus to do something. Jesus replied, “Woman my time has not yet come.”

Feeding

A crowd gathered to hear Jesus’ teachings. As night fell the people grew restless. The disciples asked Jesus to send them away so that they could eat.  Jesus replied, “Feed the multitude.”

The disciples said they did not have enough to feed the crowd. To this He stated, “Bring what you have to me.”

Jesus had been teaching for many days and the 4,000 that had gathered to listen quickly ran out of food. Jesus said to the disciples, “You feed them.”

The disciples complained about the expense, so Jesus asked, “What do you have?” (Several baskets of food were left over.)

Fig Tree

On His way to the temple, Jesus cursed a fig tree that bore no fruit by saying, “You will never again bare fruit.”

“No one will find comfort beneath your shade again.”

Understanding Thoughts

Some religious elite had gathered to try to trap Jesus by questioning him about taxes. Jesus shot back, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

Jesus and the disciples were on a boat and the disciples were discussing that there was no bread on the boat. Jesus warned them saying, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisee’s.” Jesus said, “Do you have ears but do not hear, and do you have eyes but do not see?” “When I fed the 5000, how many basketfuls did you pick up?” They said, “Twelve.” Jesus then said, “When I fed the 4000, how many basketfuls did you pick up?” They replied, “Seven.” Jesus said, “Do you still not understand?”

“Give me a drink.” “You may go back to the man that is not your husband. You have had five husbands.”

Transfiguration

“This is my Son with whom I am well pleased.”

“Do not say anything about what you have seen, for all will be revealed in time.”

Appearances

Jesus said to strangers on the road after the resurrection “Hello friend. What are you talking about?”

“See the holes in my hands. Place your hand in my side.”

Amazing Catch

“Cast your nets on the other side.”

“Lay down your nets a follow me. I will make you fishers of men.”

Exorcisms

“What is your name?”

“Okay, go into the pigs.”

“Be quiet and come out of him.”

“Even the demons know my name.”

Jesus said to a Gentile woman, “A master feeds his children before the dogs.”

“Go thy way, for thy daughter is healed.”

Healings

Woman With Blood Issue

“Who touched me?”

“I felt power leave from me.”

“Your faith has healed you.”

“Thy faith has made thee whole.”

Blind, Deaf, and Mute

Ephph…..”

Jesus was with a blind man and he took him away from the city. He put his hands on the man’s eyes. Jesus asked, “What can you see?” To which he replied, “I see men walking around like trees.” Jesus rubbed his eyes again and said to the man, “What do you see now?”

Withered Hand

“Is it better to do harm or good? Is it better to save a life or kill?”

“Stretch forth thy hand.”

Lazarus

Jesus, while mourning the death of His friend, called to the dead body, “Lazarus come forth.”

Paralytic

“Your sins are forgiven.”

“Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven’ or ‘Take up your mat and walk’?  But so you know that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins, I say to you:  Pick up your mat and go home.”

“Their faith has healed you.”

Lepers

“Go and show yourselves to the priest.”

We also ask you to continue remembering our brother and sister in Antioch that they will remain faithful to the calling set before him.  With our letter we have also sent you supplies to help you continue serving in Cyprus.

Pray for elder Gormanos, his daughter was lost to an unknown sickness.  Pray for elder Norvellonious as he prepares to take the gospel into the artic.

Tell Luke that his faithfulness and work has encouraged all the brothers and sisters in Antioch and anxiously await his work of the Gospel.

Praise be to God the Father and may the peace and grace of Christ Jesus be with you always.
